August 14, 2025
If you owna Pixel phonefrom the third generation or later, you likely already have Android 12 installed. But what if you’ve got an OG Pixel or a device in the Pixel 2 series? Unfortunately, Google won’t be supporting those phones with Android upgrades any longer, so you’re out of luck.

Of course, just because Google isn’t pushing out an official version of Android 12 doesn’t mean you can’t get it. Today, the first unofficial Google Pixel 2 Android 12 ROM is available to install (viaXDA-Developers). To be clear, at the time of publishing this article, only theGoogle Pixel 2 XLis supported, but the vanilla Pixel 2 will have support very soon.
As with most other custom ROMs, this is a community effort within the ProtonAOSP project. This project is well-regarded within the flashing community, and most users so far have seen great success with the install of the Google Pixel 2 Android 12 build. That being said, you do need to install at your own risk.
Keep in mind, though, that there are two things you won’t get with this ROM. The first is encryption support, which might be a deal-breaker for a lot of folks. The second is that SELinux is set to permissive, which drastically reduces the security of the device.
If you can look past those limitations and have a Pixel 2 XL, you canclick hereto get started installing this unofficial Android 12 ROM. As mentioned, the vanilla Pixel 2’s ROM isn’t available yet, but you canclick hereto find it once it goes live.
