HUAWEI Mate X with Kirin 990, more tweaks could be revealed at MWC 2020
June 24, 2025
TheHUAWEI Mate Xfoldable is currently available in China, touting a Kirin 980 processor. The firm previously said it was working on a variant with aKirin 990chipset, set for aMarch 2020 launchin its home market. Now, it looks like we have more details and a Western launch window for the foldable.
HUAWEI consumer business group CEO Richard Yu toldFrandroid(via machine translation) that the new device would offer the Kirin 990, a better hinge, and a “more resistant” screen.

It’s unclear how exactly the revised model’s screen will differ from the standard Mate X, butfoldable phonesall use plastic screens for the most part, making them prone to scratches in theory. So HUAWEI could be applying a coating or other technology to the display to offer better scratch resistance.
Yu told the outlet that the revised Mate X will appear at MWC 2020 in Spain. Furthermore, the HUAWEI executive mentioned that he would like to see the Mate X come to Europe in Q1 2020, but it’s unclear whether this is the revised model or the standard variant.

Either way, the HUAWEI Mate X likely won’t be equipped withGoogle Play Serviceswhen it eventually leaves China. This is due to theUS trade banagainst HUAWEI, preventing Google from supporting new HUAWEI models.
