August 11, 2025
Mid-range smartphones rarely get the press event treatment, and that continues to be the case with the quietly-announcedHUAWEI Y5 Prime (2018).
Around front, the phone sports a 5.45-inch HD+ (1,440 x 720) display with an 18:9 aspect ratio and a 5MP selfie camera. Around back is the single 13MP primary camera, but no fingerprint sensor in sight.

Instead, the Y5 Prime (2018) really wants you to use its facial recognition technology to get into your phone. The tech is there mainly for convenience rather than being able to make mobile payments, thoughHuaweisaid it will be available after an OTA update.
Under the hood, a 1.5GHz quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM power the Y5 Prime (2018). The microSD card slot can augment the 16GB of built-in storage by up to an additional 256GB, though a second model features a second SIM card and microSD card slots.
According to HUAWEI, the 3,020mAh battery and the Y5 Prime (2018)’s power saving software help deliver 62 hours of continuous music playback and 13 hours of continuous video playback. General use longevity should fall somewhere in between, thanks to the lower-end processor and display.
Finally, the Y5 Prime (2018) runsEMUI 8.0on top ofAndroid 8.1 Oreo. EMUI is far from the most popular Android skin, but it offers several useful features that improve the smartphone experience.
HUAWEI did not say how much the Y5 Prime (2018) will go for, when the phone will be available, or where it will launch. Whenever it launches, the Y5 Prime (2018) will be available in gold, black, and blue.
