Instagram Lite stealthily launched on the Play Store, weighs less than 1MB
July 12, 2025
FromFacebooktoGoogle Maps, we’re happy to see lightweight versions of popular apps hitting the Play Store. Now, Instagram Lite has joined the party, trimming the fat off the main Instagram app.
The app has quietly surfaced on the Google Play Store (h/t:r/Android), delivering most of the features seen in the main Instagram app. That means photo uploads, photo uploads for Instagram Stories, the ability to watch Stories, and the Discover functionality are all present and correct.

Instagram Lite doesn’t support video uploads or direct messages just yet, although the Facebook-owned company says they are “coming soon.” It’s still an impressive list of features for an app that weighs 573KB according to the Play Store (the size suggests it could be aprogressive web app).
What about availability?
Our team members in Croatia, Germany, Slovenia, South Africa, South Korea, and U.K. reported they were unable to download Instagram Lite. Meanwhile, reddit users in India and the U.S. say it’s unavailable for them too. We’ve contacted Instagram’s representatives for clarification on availability and other details.
Nevertheless, it marks the latest lightweight take on a popular app to hit the Play Store, joiningUber Lite,Facebook Lite,Messenger Lite,Twitter Lite,Skype Lite, and Google’s extensive suite ofGo apps.
