It looks like Microsoft’s Office suite is now available for all Chromebooks

August 02, 2025

Microsoft Office support for Chromebooks has until now been spotty at best. Despite several Chromebooks being able to download and install the Office apps when Google opened up the Play Store to the laptop products, for many other Chromebooks they weren’t available. Sometimes the apps would then show up on some Chromebooks before disappearing without warning from others.

It was a frustrating time, but, according toa new report, that period could now be over. Following comments online that Microsoft Office was available on all Chromebooks with Google Play support,Chrome Unboxedhas investigated the situation, confirming that it can be installed on a whole bunch of devices.

Neither Microsoft nor Google have had anything official to say about this just yet, and we don’t know for certain that it is open toeveryChromebook product, but this does so far seem to be the case (andMicrosoft had been working on wider support).

Though Office was previously open to Chromebooks via Microsoft’s free browser-based version, getting the official apps is significant. Microsoft’s Office products — such as Word and Excel — are among the most popular and prevalent of their kind; however, the common “Chromebooks aren’t compatible with Microsoft Office” statement could have cost Google and the various Chromebook manufacturers many sales in the past (even if more discerning users might have seen Google’s G Suite as a suitable alternative).
