Low prices, snappy performance, and ease of use have madeChromebookshugely useful and popular in the education sector. According to a recent blog post fromGoogle, in which the company celebratesWorld Teachers’ Dayand the impact that teachers have on students’ lives, there are now more than 20 million students using Chromebooks around the world.
This figure means that Google has managed to double the number of Chromebooks finding their way into student hands over the past 12 months. Last year, Google reported a figure of 10 million educational users. This latest announcement is sure to cement Google’s lead over Apple and Microsoft in the education sector.

In the blog post, Google also announced ‘Education on Air‘, its program to help teachers share their creativity with one another. Education on Air is a free online conference offering key note speeches, research findings, tips, and tools for teachers. Last year, more than 50,000 participants took part in the program. Interested teachers canregister todayto take part in this year’s conference, which is scheduled for December 3rd.
Chromebooks have turned out to be big business for Google. Statista calculated that 5.4 million Chromebooks had shipped out to customers in 2015. A couple of months ago, Global Market Insights projected that Chromebook sales numbers would reach17 million units by 2023. Of course, that all depends on what, if anything, that Google’s rumored Andromeda OS throws into the mix by then.
