July 21, 2025
Update:A previous version of this article stated that the Google Pixel 4 XL took the Best Smartphone Display Award away from the iPhone 11 Pro Max. However, the Pixel 4 XL has achieved a concurrent Best Smartphone Display Award alongside the latest iPhone and did not, in fact, take any awards away from any other smartphone. We regret the error, and this article has been updated to reflect the change.
Not too long ago, DisplayMate gave theiPhone 11 Pro Maxits “Best Smartphone Display Award.” Now there’s a new entrant into DisplayMate’s top-tier display category: TheGoogle Pixel 4 XL.
DisplayMate has awarded the Pixel 4 XLwith an A+ rating. Previously launched devices like theOnePlus 7 ProandSamsung Galaxy S10have also been given the award in 2019. Google’s previous flagship, thePixel 3 XL, received the award last year as well.
ThePixel 4 XLcomes with a 6.3 inch 3,040 x 1,440 display. It has a 19:9 aspect ratio, which is 22% larger than the average 16:9 display.

Peaking at 90Hz, the display’s refresh rate is 50% higher than than the average smartphone. It offers much smoother scrolling, video playback, and UI animations. It even automatically adjusts between 90 and 60Hz to minimize battery consumption and optimize content quality.
The display is 10% brighter, significantly more color accurate, and more power-efficient than last year’s Pixel. DisplayMate says the Pixel 4 XL’s OLED display is “visually indistinguishable from perfect,” making it the obvious selection as one of the best smartphone displays on the market.
