Sony finally clarifies which of its phones will get Pie – and when
August 01, 2025
Last week, we got wordfrom a usually-reliable sourcethat six Sony Xperia devices would start to getAndroid 9.0 Piein September, with the final device receiving the update in November.
However, it later came to light – fromSonyitself – that this schedule was not official and that the list of devices and the timeline could be very different from the leaked info.

Today,we finally have official word from Sonyon which of its devices will see Android 9.0 Pie and the schedule for that rollout.
The good news is that the original six devices are still getting some tasty Pie goodness, and the even better news is that three additional devices will see the update, too. The full list is here:
There is some bad news, though, which is that the leaked rollout date of September was not to be. According to Sony, the Pie rollout will begin in November for the XZ devices listed above, and the XA2 devices will see Android 9 in “early 2019.”
The official blog post that Sony used to announce this info also includes an elaborate infographic that details the many steps involved to roll out an Android software update. I can only assume that Sony included the graphic to explain why its Android rollouts take as long as they do. However, Sony has had access to Android 9.0 Pie for just as long asEssentialand theEssential Phonegot an Android update the same day Pie launched.
Obviously, not everyone can be as fast as Essential – considering it only has one phone to work on – but that company is proving that Android updates don’t need the months it sometimes takes to see a release.
Regardless, the infographic is below. Let us know in the comments what you think about this news!
