Sony: Striped displays aren’t a defect, here’s why they happen

It seems likeSony Xperia XZ1 CompactandXZ2owners have had to contend with strange stripes appearing on their screens. The Japanese company has now offered an explanation toTweakers(h/t:Xperia Blog), claiming the striped displays aren’t actually a defect.

The stripes reportedly appear when users frequently rub or touch their display, disappearing after a short time. Nevertheless, it’s distracting enough that some users have taken to theSony Mobile forumto report the issue.

Testing byTweakersshows that the XZ1 Compact, XZ2 andXZ2 Compactare affected by the issue. TheXperia XandXZ Premiumdon’t seem to suffer from the patterns, however.

In a statement toTweakers, Sony says the striped displays aren’t actually a defect but occur due to “electrostatic” in some devices.

“Due to the properties of the screen, stripe patterns may be seen in some models due to electrostatic effects. It is not a functional defect and usually the patterns disappear when the electrostatic disappears,” read a machine-translated version of Sony’s statement.

Sony hasn’t indicated whether compensation will be doled out to users affected by striped displays. Nevertheless, at this point, the company seems to be banking on users taking the issue in their stride.
