Star Ocean: Anamnesis is coming to the West, pre-registration available now
June 18, 2025
Square Enix’s Star Ocean: Anamnesis is officially coming to the West. It was released in Japan way back in 2016, and while it’s not clear why they waited so long to bring it over, it will come as good news to fans of anime-style action RPGs.
This new version even includes English dubbing of the in-game dialogue. This might be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on how much of an anime purist you are.

Star Ocean: Anamnesis is the first mobile entry in the space sci-fi franchise, and the visual style is similar to the rest of the series. This time, the story revolves around the Pangalactic Federation starship GFSS-3214F. As its captain, you have to deal with the fallout after a hyperdrive malfunction sends your ship into unknown territory.
The game is played in portrait mode, and players have to control their character in order to dodge attacks and defeat powerful bosses. It’s free-to-play with a gacha system of unlocking new characters. There are dozens of characters, each with their own unique abilities and stats.

As you unlock more characters, you’re able to customize your team’s layout. There are several specialized classes, including attackers, sharpshooters, defenders, invokers, and healers. You can also participate in co-op multiplayer matches to take down powerful enemies.
Although no official release date has been announced, the trailer for Star Ocean: Anamnesis mentions a July 2018 release. We’ll keep you posted when the game finally comes out.
