The HUAWEI Nova 5 could include the debut of a brand new chipset

July 16, 2025

In a post onWeibo(viaGSM Arena), the head of HUAWEI’s smartphone division revealed that the upcoming HUAWEI Nova 5 will come with a brand new chipset. This unnamed chipset will bea 7nm node, just like the company’s current flagship processor, theKirin 980.

If this pans out,Huaweiwould be the first company with two 7nm chipsets in its portfolio. Qualcomm only has theSnapdragon 855and Samsung’sExynos 9820is an 8nm node.

The HUAWEI HiSilicon Kirin 980 chipset.

He Gang, who revealed the HUAWEI Nova 5 chipset news, declined to say what the chipset will be called. However, speculation abounds that it will be the Kirin 810. If true, it would replace theKirin 710which is used in many of HUAWEI’s mid-range smartphones.

We also have heard plenty of rumors that HUAWEI could launch theKirin 985very soon, possibly with theHUAWEI Mate 30 series. This would be a slightly upgraded version of the 980, which means it would very likely also be a 7nm node.

Chipsets with 7nm builds are faster than chipsets with larger transistors — such as theQualcomm Snapdragon 845, which has a 10nm process. In general, the smaller the transistors the more you can fit on a chip and the faster the processor can transmit information.

While not much else is known about this upcoming chipset from HUAWEI, it’s very likely it will make using the HUAWEI Nova 5 a very snappy experience. HUAWEI willlaunch the Nova 5on June 21.
