The Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P may have just received their last updates

Launched in 2015, theNexus 5XandNexus 6Pare practically ancient at this point. That said,Googleguaranteed and delivered three years of updates for the two smartphones. With updatesno longer guaranteedfor the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P, we might see the end of an era as soon as December.
That does not mean the two remaining Nexus smartphones officially reached end-of-life status. Keep in mind that theNexus 5andNexus 6each saw an update after their supposed ends. The Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P already receivedtwo extra security patches, so one or two additional patches would not be unheard of.

The Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P also retain strong ROM communities that continue to push out custom software for the two smartphones and represented a turning point for Google in the camera department.
That said, the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P are still onAndroid 8.1 Oreoand will not get the officialAndroid 9 Pieupdate. Both smartphones also encountered several frustrating hardware problems that led to bootloops and lawsuits againstLGandGoogle.

The Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P were also notable for being two of thebest Android smartphonesduring a time when Qualcomm floundered with its flagship processors. TheSnapdragon 810in the Nexus 6P was notorious for its overheating and resulting performance throttling. TheSnapdragon 808in the Nexus 5X acted as a band-aid that delivered good performance and was featured in other flagship smartphones.
If you still own and use either the Nexus 5X or Nexus 6P, bless your heart. Google may have killed the Nexus program, but phones like theOnePlus 6Tshow that the Nexus legacy lives on in other devices. Also of note is theAndroid Oneprogram, which features smartphones with a clean version of Android, timely updates, and relatively low price tags.
