(Update: Officially announced) Google Home’s calling feature might be coming soon

A luckyGoogle Homeuser was able to make hands-free calls on his smart speaker for a brief moment, indicating that Google might be releasing this new feature soon.
Google Home’s main competitor – Amazon Echo devices – can make calls and in some cases, video calls already. Not to be left behind in the fast-growing smart speaker market, the search giant announced back in May thathands-free calling capabilities would be coming to US and Canada Google Home ownersin the future. Although Google didn’t specify exactly when we would be seeing this feature, ifthis videois any indication, it might be sooner than expected.
The video, filmed by a lucky Google Home owner and a Redditor, shows him making a hands-free phone call to Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas (the best place on earth, FYI) on his smart speaker. He ends the call by saying “OK, Google – hang up.” Unfortunately, however, the same user commented on hisRedditthread that within the same hour the video was uploaded, the feature was gone. Google may have accidentally rolled out the new calling feature a little too soon, similar to what happened with multi-user support in countries like Canada, meaning that it may not be too long before we see it roll out officially in full scale.
At Google I/O this year, the search giant said that a new update would let users in the US and Canada make hands-free outgoing calls for free and that it would also allow users to link their phone numbers to their Google Homes for caller ID purposes. Given the fact that Amazon Echo devices have had this feature since May, the wait could be over very soon for Google Home owners. As is the case with most Google Home updates, the US should see it first, followed by Canada shortly after.
